The 13th annual Brattleboro Literary Festival is setting the stage for another wonderful celebration of literature and books. More than 50 authors, artists and illustrators, poets, book professionals and writers for young people converge on Brattleboro to create a series of powerful, memorable, not-to-be-missed events.

More than 5,000 people will attend one or more of the 30-plus events featuring authors such as Pulitzer-Prize-winning Irish poet Paul Muldoon, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian Joseph Ellis (Founding Brothers), and best-selling fiction authors Emma Straub (The Vacationers), Paula McLain (The Paris Wife), and Andre Dubus III (House of Sand and Fog).

NPR personality Ophira Eisenberg (Ask Me Another and Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!) and 2014 Golden Kite Award winner Tim Federle, who will read for 750 middle grade students and their teachers, who will converge on the Latchis Theatre from points all over Windham County.

The celebrity judge for the Gilfeather Turnip Contest this year is Margaret Roach, a noted garden author and former garden editor for Martha Stewart “LIVING” magazine. Stay for lots of live music, strolling musicians and more. This is a one-of-a-kind culinary event and is an annual fundraiser for the Friends of the Wardsboro Library.

“Rest in Peace” Concert

In honor of All Souls Day, Friends of Music at Guilford and Brattleboro Area Hospice are celebrating its 35th Anniversary by collaborating on a concert titled “Rest in Peace.” The program includes two song series and a number of instrumental interludes. The songs will be performed by a group of regional voices gathered specially for this concert. Musical interludes to suit the theme will be performed by an ensemble of Guilford Chamber Players, including Amy Cann and Linda Hecker, among others. Reception follows the performance. Admission is $10 per person at the door.

More than 100 internationally known photographs will be available for purchase at this year’s auction, the 16th annual one, which includes works from Jonathan Gitelson, Mariette Pathy Allen, Corey Armpriester, Douglas Beasley, Marion Belanger, Geoffrey Bluh, Janice Boudreau, George Bouret, Kevin Bubriski, Philip Calabria, and others.

The estate of John Launois has donated two photographs taken of the Beatles, one that became the Aug. 8, 1964 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Dennis Brack, a White House photographer for more than 52 years, donated another Beatles photograph.

This year’s auction is dedicated to a local photographer, Roger Katz, a longtime supporter of In-Sight who passed away in April 2013. An opening will be held at Insight on Friday, Oct 3, 5:30-8:30p, as part of Brattleboro’s Gallery Walk. Bids will be accepted at the exhibit or online.

Fall Into Art: Celebrating Art Across the Ages

Art show and silent auction featuring artwork by dozens of local artists and young children from the community. Artists donate work and take home one-half the price when the piece is sold. Live music by Jazzberry Jam, catered by Vermont Country Deli, a cash bar by Windham Wines, caricatures by artist John Steven Gurney, an art activities for children. Tickets are $20 advance/$25 at the door. Proceeds from Fall Into Art support Windham Child Care Association’s mission of improving the lives of families with young children in Windham County.
