May 26: Spring Organ Barn Concert & Holiday Cookout, 3p: Guilford Chamber Singers perform 10 songs set to texts by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Foster, Teasdale; Christopher Lewis performs on the c. 1897 Tracker organ. A festive holiday picnic follows with grilling options for vegetarians and omnivores. June 9: 6 to 6:30 or so: The three-part evening begins with a brief and merry annual membership meeting for Friends of Music at 6p in Zeller Hall downstairs. 6:45p or earlier: A Community Potluck in Zeller Hall offers a typically wide range of dishes. FOMAG provides sandwich fixings for vegetarians and carnivores alike to help cover the bases. Sides and salads, as well as other main dishes, are welcome. Desserts are set aside for the post-concert reception. 7:30p: The A Cappella Concert in the Sanctuary of GCC features an opening set by Southern Vermont’s Big Woods Voices: Becky Graber, Amanda Witman, Will Danforth, and Alan Blood. The second half presents Green Street Brew, a dozen or more singers long renowned in the Pioneer Valley for their rock, jazz, and pop arrangements. A delectable dessert reception downstairs caps the evening. Concert admission is free; donations are most welcome to help offset the event’s considerable costs. Labor Day Weekend Festival is Aug 31, 7:30p. Organ recital by Susan Summerfield. Sept 1, 2p: Guilford Festival Orchestra performs Berlioz song cycle Nuits d’été with soprano Julie Olsson and works by other Romantic era composers; grounds open at noon for picnicking and lunch sales.

After three weeks of daily rehearsals, Marlboro artists begin sharing results of their in-depth collaborations. Public concerts are presented on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons July 13–Aug 11, and Friday evenings July 26*–Aug 9. Programs will be selected from 60–80 groups in rehearsal at any one time; only one quarter of the 250-plus works explored is presented. All events take place at Persons Auditorium, Marlboro College, with this exception: *Friday, July 26, 8p: annual town benefit concert in Marlboro College Dining Hall. VSO’s Summer Festival Tour, “Strike up the Orchestra!” July 2: Manchester; July 3: Grafton: Pack a picnic basket and celebrate the sound of summer in Vermont! This year’s “Strike up the Orchestra!” was crafted by guest conductor Sharon Lavery, making her VSO debut. The orchestra showcases the composers who set America to music: Gershwin, Joplin, Bernstein, Copland, and the foremost film composer of our generation, John Williams. VSO Principal Clarinet Kelli O’Connor is featured soloist in a jazzy concerto by Artie Shaw. Concerts close with a dazzling fireworks display accompanying Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture and the beloved marches of John Philip Sousa.
