Women’s Community Club of Grafton Celebrates Centennial Year with Gala

Aug 18, 5-8p, The Barn, 1700 Cabell Road, Grafton

http://www.facebook.com/Grafton.WCC

Seventy-five women gathered in the Baptist Vestry on Feb. 28, 1918 to organize the Ladies Knitting Club, which raised money, knitted clothing, and gave aid and support to American soldiers during World War I. After the war, the club—renamed the Women’s Community Club—turned its attention to a variety of efforts in Grafton. In 1938, Susan Daniels, the club’s first lifetime member, left funds to the club to promote higher education, maintain Village Park, and tune the pianos in the town Hall, chapel, and village school.

This summer’s gala celebrates the nonprofit Grafton WCC as an active contributor to Grafton and the community these past 100 years, in which time its members—now numbering 132—continued the essential tradition of raising money and giving scholarship aid to local Grafton students. Barbara Fisher Rogers received the first $100 gift in 1966–1967.

In recent years, members have increased aid to as much as $5,000 to help with college expenses. Overall, the club gives out $20,000 annually and has awarded 218 scholarships to 124 individuals.

The gala will be highlighted by a half-hour concert of musicians from Boston’s Grammy Award–nominated orchestra A Far Cry, along with an Arts and Craft Auction to help celebrate the artists and arts tradition in Grafton. MKT will provide the food and there will be a cash bar.

Admission is $50 per person. Tickets go on sale in June. See you in Grafton!
