It’s not easy to prepare a hill like this: It’s perfect.” So opined Austrian ski jumping coach Florian Gugg to the Brattleboro Reformer at last year’s renowned Harris Hill Ski Jump event in Brattleboro. Once again some of the world’s top rising ski jumpers are primed to soar at New England’s only Olympic-size venue, Feb. 16-17. For nearly a century, athletes from throughout North America and Europe have sailed off a 90-meter hill—one of just six of its size in the United States—before thousands of thrill seekers. Young and old cheer as jumpers shoot at 60 miles an hour and more, soaring more than 300 feet over a hill dressed with man-made snow (ensuring that weather doesn’t cancel the flights).
Harris Hill—with Saturday’s Pepsi Challenge and Sunday’s Fred Harris Memorial Tournament—is also a stop on the U.S. Cup Series. Gates open at 10a with trial rounds at 11; opening ceremonies are at noon on Saturday. Competitions begin at 12:45. The family-welcome event is rounded out with food and drink vendors, a bonfire, music, a beer tent, tailgating, and mascot Jumper the Cow.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for ages 6-12. Children 5 and under: free. Purchase at the gate—or at HarrisHillSkiJump.com for advance discounts. Parking is free at the hill but the field may be muddy and/or bumpy. (Keep this in mind for low-ground-clearance vehicles.) For more information on parking and the event, visit the website or the event’s Facebook/Twitter pages.
Harris Hill Ski Jump on Cedar Street is presented by hundreds of community volunteers and supported by ticket sales, donations, and sponsors including Pepsi, Mount Snow and The Richards Group. The friendly buzz of spectators and competitors in a welcoming festive setting make Harris Hill an all-time New England favorite!
